Necronomicon translated by Olaus Wormius (1623; Latin)

The most common surviving text of the black book, based on a very rare Latin edition of 1228 and the lost Greek translation of 950 A.D.; there are possibly a dozen copies extant, though only six are definitely known and catalogued. Poring over it (reading between investigations) adds +3 to your Cthulhu Mythos rating.

At the Orne Library, under lock and key.

Kingsport Yacht Club

2013-03-17T15:11:07Z

Thomas:

The Kingsport Yacht Club is a private men’s club located near the piers of that haunted city of the Miskatonic region. Wealthy patrician males gather here for private conversation, quality liquor, and to retrieve and smoke prized cigars stored in the club’s superb walk-in humidor. Priding itself on exclusivity, the club does not admit women, Jews, ethnics, or non-whites. It espouses no overt ideology, other than the rights of the privileged to sedately enjoy the perquisites of their stations in life.

The Kingsport Yacht Club was founded in 1870 by the shipping magnate Oren Gardiner, patriarch of its leading family. The Gardiners acquired their wealth first as fishermen, then expanded their holdings into a small maritime empire. Oren belonged to the fourth generation of wealthy Gardiners. His grandson Oliver is president emeritus of the club today.

Yacht ownership is a plus but not a prerequisite. Although not a member, Matthew Deveraux may be the best candidate for membership. All he needs to do is find a sponsor within the club and, as long as there's nothing untoward in his background, he should be in. Neither Seamus nor Mariette would be suitable candidates -- putting aside Mariette's gender, neither one is, well, rich enough to join.

Eerie Things Going On
Some of the people of Kingport (particularly younger fisherman/dock) have the Innsmouth look. The higher up at the Yacht Club do not. The Gardner family controls most of the fishing and canning and "Fish Gold" used in Innsmouth-like jewelry. They are working with the criminal element to control distribution farther up the coast and keep other fisherman at bay. Gardner has bought out several of the other fisherman but keep the same "company" name. The prosperity of Gardner has grown significantly over the last few years.

Gardiner family has had a rash of deaths. All the kids and relatives have "died" mostly at sea or near the sea by the age of 40. Oliver is the only long lived member. Rumors are that they are not dead and the cemetery plots are empty. Oren Gardiner was the founding patriarch who is the only survivor of a boating accident in the 1800's. He continued to go back to sea and gradually grew the wealth and prosperity of the family.

Dr. Lynch, the yacht club's secretary, and his possible involvement with stillbirths and miscarriages, were being investigated by Russel Lane, who later turned up murdered by something.

Kingsport used to be called Mount-Dagonne by the natives. The worshipped a god of the sea and had great fishing prosperity.

People and Locations
Oliver Gardiner, father of Zora, head of the Kingsport Yacht Club, owns shipping and canning (very upstanding).

Horace "Diamond" Walsh, a criminal, new to area. He attempts to speak with Seamus and seems out of place. Works in the black market.

Zora Walsh is the new wife to Horace Walsh

Dr. Lynch, a physician-surgeon (?) secretary for the Kingsport Yacht Club

The Art Fete at the Hower Estate
People from the KYC in attendance
Oliver Gardiner, president of the KYC.

Everett Lynch, MD, secretary of the KYC.

Zora Walsh, daughter of Oliver.

Horace "Diamond" Walsh, head of criminal organization, husband to Zora.

Other locals in attendance
Edwin Coffin, a detective in Kingsport.

Walter Palsgrave, an artist invited to exhibit his current collection-darker abstract

Joseph Teller, architect

Raymond Becker, a banker from Salem

Mr. Joyce-Cleveland, the father of Jan Joyce-Cleveland, who presumably died when investigating Thomas Fell's disappearance.

Russel Lane, disguised as a waiter, investigating Dr. Lynch. Later turns up dead.

Elsa Hower, younger sister to Magdelina. Is possibly the woman in the photo in the first document

Events at the art fete
Gardner, Walsh, Dr. Lynch, and Zora are together - appears to be some connection between the Gardner and Walsh. Possibly Gardner working with Walsh to move product up to the "families" in the New York area. Seamus establishes rapport with Walsh, Matthieu establishes rapport with Gardner/Kingsport Yacht Club, Mariette meets Russell and finds out that something strange is going on at the Yacht Club.
Towards the end of the evening Matthieu notices that Elsa (Magdelina's sister) has pictures taken of her in the same clothing and pose as in the photo with the missing face from Document 1.
Seamus and Mariette leave early to visit Russell at the Kingfisher hotel (Room 107). They find the room locked and after kicking in the door they find Russell dead with a ransacked room and a broken window. Body has 4 parallel slashes like razor blades on neck and forearms. Salt water near broken window and webbed footprints. Detective Coffin suspects Mariette and Seamus of being there. Met with Detective and put his mind at ease. He will stay out of our way and we are to stay out of his.

Thomas:

The New England League Of Amateur Astronomers (N.E.L.A.A.) is a club uniting stargazing hobbyists from the greater Miskatonic river basin. They meet on a monthly basis, organize occasional field trips, issue a newsletter, and raise funds with a Christmas social. Hard times have cut the organization’s membership in half; it now numbers less than twenty-five. Full membership, including newsletter and voting privileges, costs two dollars per year. Auxiliary membership, allowing non-voting participation in meetings and social attendance, costs fifty cents.

Interaction with NELAA
Stargazing on the Solstice: Took a bus out of town up some hills with standing stones. Mattheu, Marriette, and Seamus travel with NELAA members

Eerie Things Going On
Hey, they all seem normal. Except that they've been tracking a "moving constellation", which some members seem to think is either a comet or an asteroid.

Notable People and Places
Members at the Autumnal Solstice event
Thomas Ongine, the balding organizer of the group drives the bus out of town to remote sites to better see the stars. He is in his 50s, very friendly, and strums traditional Appalachian songs on a battered guitar.

Heidi Pinion, a "retiree" in her late 40s, attends NELAA events (and other social functions in town) more out of curiosity than anything, really. She loves the night sky and loves people-watching. She and Thomas are on the "board" of NELAA, such as it is. She always seems to be smiling, possibly smirking.

Lily Hawthorne is a young woman in her twenties with jet black hair. She seems to have a fan club consisting of the younger men in the group.

Eddie Friedmann is in his 20s, a bit overweight, with curly black hair and glasses. He's a clerk at the First Bank of Arkham.

Troy Lasky is in his mid 20s. He works at Hayne's Hardware. He's built like a runner, clean shaven with tousled blonde hair.

Melisa Cambron is a housewife in her 30s. She is a "writer of small things". She keeps her wavy brown hair tucked nicely under a smart hat.

Jordan Purser is in his late 20s and has short cropped hair with a trimmed beard and moustache. He's an accountant at L. B. Smith & Associates here in Arkham.

Locations
The bus usually leaves from the ESSO station by the Garrison Street Bridge in [Arkham].

The Autumnal Solstice stargazing event took place just over an hour out of Arkham to the Upper Miskatonic Valley.

NELAA

2013-03-17T01:29:36Z

Thomas: /* On the Autumnal Solstice event */

The New England League Of Amateur Astronomers (N.E.L.A.A.) is a club uniting stargazing hobbyists from the greater Miskatonic river basin. They meet on a monthly basis, organize occasional field trips, issue a newsletter, and raise funds with a Christmas social. Hard times have cut the organization’s membership in half; it now numbers less than twenty-five. Full membership, including newsletter and voting privileges, costs two dollars per year. Auxiliary membership, allowing non-voting participation in meetings and social attendance, costs fifty cents.

Members
At the Autumnal Solstice event

Character Snapshot
Occupation: Parapsychologist

Drive: Thirst for Knowledge

As a student of the famous behaviorist, Carl Jung, many are surprised at her interest in the supernatural and her interest in parapsychology. Perhaps it is a reaction to the strict empiricism of the behaviorism of 1930s. Not being married, she is something of an odd woman. Many who know her blame her bullheadedness.
